There's no fruit more synonymous with summer than watermelon. Not only is the red-hued fruit tasty, beautiful, and widely available, but because it is comprised of 90% water, it's a fantastic option if you're trying to lose weight, because it's a sweet and satisfying treat that also keeps you feeling fuller, longer compared to many other snacks. In fact, research from the University of Kentucky suggests that eating watermelon improves lipid profiles and lowers fat accumulation, thanks to the fruit's high concentration of anthocyanin, a compound that calms the action of fat-storage genes and gives watermelon its signature hue. It gets better: Watermelon may also help reduce the level of muscle soreness after a tough workout.

Whether you're trying to lose weight, looking for the perfect post-workout snack, or just want a more inventive way to incorporate watermelon into your July 4th BBQ, we've got you covered. Make the most of watermelon season by loading up on these healthy watermelon-based recipes. You'll be shocked to learn how versatile this fruit is!

These easy, delicious treats require only two ingredients—puréed watermelon and puréed kiwi (and technically, some popsicle sticks). Just blend them together and freeze them in a popsicle mold for the perfect watermelon snack!

The Perfect Summer Salad

The name of this dish doesn't lie; it really is the perfect summer salad. Sure, it's tasty, but it's also brimming with health benefits, thanks to its watercress base. A report published by the Centers for Disease Control ranked 47 fruits and vegetables by their amounts of 17 disease-fighting nutrients, and the CDC crowned watercress number one. Gram for gram, the mild-tasting green contains four times more beta carotene than an apple and a whopping 238 percent of the daily recommended vitamin K, an oft-overlooked bone builder and heart protector.

Chili Lime Cucumber Noodles on Salted Watermelon with Mint & Basil

Watermelon Salad with Basil Ginger Dressing

This salad is higher in protein than other fruit salads, thanks to the slivered almonds sprinkled on top. The light drizzle of the basil-ginger dressing complements the heat from the red onion that is interspersed throughout an abyss of sweet watermelon. Plus, the only sugar in this dish comes from the honey and, of course, the watermelon itself. Give your body the cooling effect it deserves with a refreshing bowl of fruit that ends with a spicy kick!

Get the recipe from Lexi's Clean Kitchen.

Watermelon Frosty

watermelon slushes

Wendy's Frosty just got kicked to the curb with this drink. The best part? It only has five ingredients!

Get the recipe from Running to the Kitchen.

Spinach, Watermelon, & Zucchini Salad

spinach watermelon zucchini salad

As we said earlier, watermelon is mostly comprised of water, but zucchini is even more full of H2O—about 95%, according to WebMD. Combining the two makes this salad super hydrating, and super filling. That grilled masterpiece laying across the bed of greens (and a splash of pink from the watermelon) may look like a chicken breast, but it's actually grilled Halloumi cheese. Halloumi remains solid, even when heated, which is why it works so well when it's grilled. It's also one of the most delicious cheeses ever!

Strawberry Chia Watermelon Smoothie

strawberry watermelon chia smoothie glasses

Chia seeds can be mixed into bowls of fruit, smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt parfaits, and plenty more. With five grams of fiber per tablespoon, why wouldn't you use this wonder ingredient? In addition, chia seeds have a special liquid-binding power, which means that they physically expand and thicken the liquid they're immersed in. Translation? You'll feel fuller, faster!

Get the recipe from Minimalist Baker.

Heirloom Tomato, Watermelon, & Fennel Salad

tomato watermelon fennel salad

Fennel is one of the quirkier superfoods that you don't hear about as often as powerhouses like beets and kale. But don't overlook the value of fennel, because it carries a specific amino acid called histidine. Histidine is a protein that stimulates the production of hemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells), and when paired with iron, has been shown to help combat anemia. Women who are not pregnant need about 15 to 18 milligrams of iron per day, and thankfully, the vitamin C-rich tomatoes and watermelon aid in the absorption of iron in your bloodstream. Reap the energizing benefits of this salad, stat!

Get the recipe from VeguKate.

Watermelon Feta Salad with Cornmeal Crusted Fried Scallops

salad with watermelon feta and scallops

This isn't perfectly healthy—fried scallops are not something you want to consume regularly—but we couldn't pass up this creation. It's chock-full of protein, so you certainly won't need to eat more than a serving size in order to feel satisfied. Fun fact: Your body can only synthesize 20 to 30 grams of protein in a single sitting, so anything more just turns straight into fat. You've been warned!

Get the recipe from Running to the Kitchen.

Watermelon Lime Slushie

two glasses of watermelon lime slushies

Talk about refreshing! The lime adds a tangy twist to this mega-sweet drink and will help you stay hydrated throughout the course of a sunny day. Opt for a glass of this slushie rather than a beer or margarita, which will only dehydrate you—which could even put you at risk for heatstroke.

Get the recipe from Running to the Kitchen.

Watermelon Salad with Feta & Mint

watermelon salad with feta and mint

So, here's a fun fact about pairing fruit with cheese: It actually helps stabilize your blood sugar. Thankfully, most fruits have a low glycemic index, which just means your sugar levels won't spike immediately after you eat it. Watermelon actually has a medium glycemic index, so your body breaks it down a bit quicker, which may lead to an immediate sugar spike and typically a hankering for more food. This can happen if it's eaten alone—but when paired with a protein, the effects of sugar will mellow out, helping you to feel full. The addition of protein even boosts your metabolism!

Get the recipe from Lexi's Clean Kitchen.

Summer Melon Fruit Salad

summer melon fruit salad with berries

Sometimes, you just want a classic side dish, and that's where this fruit salad comes in. Made with watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, strawberries, blueberries, and more, this just might be the most colorful side dish at your Fourth of July gathering.

Get the recipe from Creme de la Crumb.

Coconut Lime Watermelon Slushie

watermelon coconut slushie

Have you ever enjoyed a frozen drink straight from a hollowed-out pineapple? What if we told you that you can do the same thing with a watermelon? Did we just blow your mind?

Get the recipe from Minimalist Baker.

Watermelon Juice

Don't feel like making the slushie? Juice your watermelon instead! Easy as pie—and way better for you!

The world of cooking and sharing recipes has rapidly changed over the last couple of years, with platforms like Instagram and TikTok now being some of the largest hubs for recipe inspiration. When you're craving a certain snack or dish, all you have to do is type it into the search bar, and you'll have hundreds of different ways to prepare it right at your fingertips. And with these social media platforms, it doesn't take long at all for fun new cooking trends to become viral, with everyone rushing to their phones to share their latest variations on how to make cloud bread or dirty soda. And that's exactly what happened with the latest food trend: cottage cheese recipes.

With almost 600,000 posts for #cottagecheese on Instagram and 91.6 million views for #cottagecheeserecipes on TikTok, the trend of using cottage cheese in creative, unexpected recipes (like cottage cheese ice cream) has taken the internet by storm and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon—or at least until the next food trend catches on.

But what is it about cottage cheese recipes that draws people in? For starters, this cheese provides a creamy texture for both sweet and savory dishes when it's blended. The flavor is also mild in taste, meaning it can be put into a variety of recipes without altering the flavor profiles too much. But perhaps most appealing of all, cottage cheese is a high-protein food with very little fat, making it a healthy replacement for things like heavy cream or cream cheese. In fact, in one cup of 2% cottage cheese you'll get 18 grams of protein and only 5 grams of fat.

With all of these cottage cheese benefits, it's no surprise that this trend has caught on so fast. If using cottage cheese as the base in your next dish is something you want to try, we've gathered 18 of the most creative, easy-to-make cottage cheese recipes from Instagram that we could find for you.

Cottage Cheese Milkshake

Cottage cheese ice cream has gone viral, but have you heard of a cottage cheese milkshake? This treat will remind you of your favorite diner milkshake, but with much less sugar and fat, as well as a whopping 32 grams of protein. Try your hand at a Mediterranean-inspired breakfast with this cottage cheese breakfast bowl. Made with cottage cheese, olive oil, cucumbers, tomatoes, and eggs, you'll be able to enjoy a savory breakfast with tons of protein.

If cottage cheese can make the perfect texture for ice cream, it can certainly do the same for a smoothie. This recipe uses cottage cheese, cashew butter, protein powder, milk, blueberries, and a surprising addition of zucchini for an even creamier texture. You'll already have plenty of protein there, but you can add yogurt to your glass to make a yogurt/smoothie swirl for even more protein.

1. Mexican-Style Hot Dogs

Healthy mexican hot dogs

Combine the fresh taste of pico de gallo and/or salsa, guacamole, and jalapeños for a lighter mix of hot dog toppings. Pro tip: For an extra touch of smokiness (and an additional green veggie to help meet your daily veggie quota for the day) pop some fresh scallions on the grill and add those to your hot dog, too.

What you need:

  • Pico de gallo
  • Guacamole (Try our recipe for homemade guacamole!)
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Scallions (throw them on the grill with your hot dog!)

2. Chicago Hot Dog

Low-calorie chicago dog

If there's one thing Chicago has mastered, it's the art of blending a dynamic mix of flavors, textures, and colors for its signature dishes—and the hot dog toppings for a classic Chicago dog are no exception. To make a Chicago hot dog,  you'll need pickles, tomatoes, raw diced onions, along with a little relish, mustard, and celery salt. And, of course, it wouldn't be a real Chicago hot dog without serving it on a poppyseed bun.

What you need:

  • Yellow mustard
  • Chopped white onions
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Tomato slices
  • Pickled sport peppers
  • Dill pickle spear
  • Dash of celery salt
  • Poppyseed bun

3. Teriyaki Dogs With Grilled Pineapple

teriyaki hot dog

Admittedly, few meals are more indulgent than a bacon-wrapped hot dog—but sometimes you need to let yourself live a little! Each bacon-wrapped dog (minus the bun and toppings) is about 35 calories worth of pork, so consumed in healthy moderation, this decadent dog can be a tasty once-in-awhile treat. The crisp saltiness of the bacon perfectly complements the sweetness of the grilled pineapple chunks and teriyaki glaze, as well as the heat of the jalapeños. Not a fan of jalapeños' intense spiciness? For an equally flavorful kick that's more tolerable for spicy-sensitive palates, try throwing on a dash of Crystal Hot Sauce instead.

What you need:

  • Bacon
  • Pineapple
  • Teriyaki sauce
  • Pickled jalapeño peppers and/or hot sauce

4. Kimchi

Sick of simple coleslaw and looking to branch out from sauerkraut? Try throwing a little kimchi on top of your grilled hot dog. A fermented, spicy cabbage that is a mainstay in Korean cuisine, kimchi brightens up a basic hot dog with a sweet yet sharp tanginess.

What you need:

  • Cabbage slaw (cabbage, lime juice, mayonnaise, sesame seeds, sesame oil)
  • Kimchi

5. Sauerkraut & brown mustard

hot dog with sauerkraut and brown mustard

Typically, you'll find sauerkraut—a type of fermented cabbage—and brown (or ground) alongside a plate of bratwurst. However, these toppings also pair nicely will an all-beef hot dog. For an added boost of deliciousness, you can cut through the bold acidity of these toppings by also incorporating Swiss cheese.

What you need:

  • Sauerkraut
  • Brown or ground mustard
  • Swiss cheese (optional)

6. Texas Chili Cheese Dog

Chili cheese hot dog

When it comes to hot dog toppings, you can't go wrong with a classic chili-cheese combo courtesy of the great state of Texas. Pair your chili dog with a cup of crisp cold coleslaw or even throw some on top for the added textural dimension that will surely have you singing, "The chili dogs at night are big and bright (clap, clap, clap, clap) deep in the heart of Texas!"

What you need:

7. BBQ sauce & crispy onions

hot dog with crispy onions and bbq sauce

Crispy onions, or onion rights, are often seen served alongside burgers or, in some cases, even sprinkled on top. However, this savory munchy is also just as delish when served on top of a juicy grilled hot dog. And for an added gourmet touch, include BBQ sauce and some tart sliced pickles for a mouthful of vibrant flavor.

What you need:

  • 1 hot dog
  • Standard hot dog buns
  • Crispy onions or onion rings
  • Dill pickle slices (optional)

8. The 'Walking Taco' Dog

If you love a good "walking taco"—which is when you pour all your favorite taco ingredients, including taco meat or chili, into a bag of corn chips—then this is the hot dog for you! After pulling your meat off the grill and popping it into a bun, get your dog ready to strut its stuff by dressing it up with all your favorite on-the-go taco mixings.

What you need:

  • Beef chili (including a little taco seasoning)
  • Cheese sauce
  • Crushed corn chips
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Sour cream

9. Country Breakfast Dog

Paul bunyon

Attention early birds! Forget about getting the worm; grab one of these hot dogs instead! Hardcore breakfast and breakfast-for-dinner fans alike can prepare to salivate over the hot dog of your dreams. This hot dog topping combo includes a sunnyside-up egg, crispy bacon, savory home fries, and a light drizzle of maple syrup for an added undercurrent of sweetness that really ties the flavors together.

To load up your hot dog with these toppings, you will want to use the dog to create a bed for the ingredients to rest on. Cut your hot dog lengthwise, as if you were butterflying it, then grill cut side down for about 2 minutes. Then flip it and grill for another 2 minutes.

What you need:

  • Home fries
  • Crumbled bacon
  • Sunny-side-up egg
  • Maple syrup drizzle

10. Italian Dog

the italian

An Italian Dog is an attempt to capture the bold flavors of a classic Italian sausage and peppers recipe. To make this hot dog, you'll need a grilled all-beef hot dog and a little olive oil to sauté your potatoes, onions, and peppers in, and a torpedo roll in lieu of a regular hot dog bun.

What you need:

  • Diced Yukon Gold potatoes
  • Green bell pepper
  • Sliced white onion

    11. Cubano-Inspired Dog

    miami dog

Sink your teeth into this combination of Cuban-American flavors as you dress up your hot dog like a classic Cuban sandwich. Layers of thin-sliced deli ham, salami, Swiss cheese, spicy mustard, sliced dill pickles, and brown mustard will awaken your tastebuds like a savory shock to the system.

    • Deli ham
    • Swiss cheese
    • Salami
    • Dill pickle slices
    • Mustard

    12. Bánh Mì-Style Dog

    bun mi

A staple street food sandwich in Vietnamese cuisine, bánh mì is typically made with savory meats (usually ham), crunchy pickled veggies, and a smear of creamy mayo, served on a light and crispy baguette. To capture the essence of a traditional bánh mì sandwich via your hot dog, forgo the usual bun to opt for a baguette and dress your dog with the same veggies. For hotheads who love added spice, we also suggest using a drizzle of Sriracha mayo on this one.

    What you need:

    • Sriracha mayo
    • Cucumber
    • Pickled carrots
    • Pickled daikon radish
    • Jalapeños
    • Cilantro
    • Sliced baguette

    13. Avocado & Chipotle Mayo

    the Oscar

As a healthy fat and all-around versatile fruit, avocado makes for an excellent omega 3-rich hot dog topping. To make this hot dog, slice up about a quarter of an avocado per dog. Pair this with some smoky, creamy chipotle mayo, some raw shredded cabbage, and a few scallions for an added boost of nutrients and flavor.

    What you need:

    • Chipotle mayo
    • Avocado slices
    • Shredded green cabbage
    • Scallions

        14. 'Philly Cheesesteak' dog: Peppers, onions, & cheese

        Healthy philly cheesesteak

Take your tastebuds on a trip to Philadelphia, home of the Liberty Bell, Eagles football, and of course—the classic Philly cheesesteak. This hot dog combo is a take on this beloved sandwich. All you need for this Philly-inspired dog is to sauté up some onions and peppers and add a little melted cheese. If you really want to keep things true to Philly form, we suggest using provolone cheese or Cheez Whiz on this hot dog.

        What you need:

        • Sweet onion
        • Green peppers
        • Provolone cheese (or Cheez Wiz)

Get inspired by our recipe for a Philly Cheesesteak With Caramelized Veggies (pictured above).

        15. Pimento cheese & pickled jalapeños

Although many varieties of cheese can make for a great hot dog topping addition, creamy pimento cheese will give your hot dog a one-of-a-kind comfort food twist. Turn up the heat while adding another unique facet of flavor by sprinkling some pickled jalapeños on top.

        What you need:

        • Pimento cheese
        • Pickled jalapeños

        16. Baked beans & bacon

        baked beans

Bacon is a common ingredient used in many classic baked beans recipes. That said, it's clear that a bacon-baked beans combo represents the perfect marriage of salty, sweet, and smoky flavors. But why take a basic approach and serve this alongside your hot dog when you can put it on top and get a taste of everything all in one glorious bite?

Unsure of how to make the perfect pot of baked beans? Get our recipe for Smoky Baked Beans.

        What you need:

        • Baked beans
        • Bacon

        17. Baked beans & chips

Baked beans and potato chips are side and snack staples at summer BBQs, but have you ever considered using them as hot dog toppings? The perfect balance of salty, smoky, and sweet flavors, this combo also provides a satisfying crunch courtesy of the sprinkling of potato chips.

        What you need:

        • Baked beans
        • Potato chips

          18. Disco Dog: Gravy & fries

From diners in the U.S. to pubs in Quebec, poutine—aka disco fries—remains an irresistible high-demand comfort food dish. Though a solid standalone app, this combination of ingredients also makes for incredible hot dog toppings. To make this, you'll need rich brown gravy, gooey melted cheese, and a pile of salty, crisp French fries. When it comes to which type of cheese to use for this one, we recommend a white cheese like mozzarella or American—or go the authentic Québecois distance by tossing on a few cheese curds.

          What you need:

          • Brown gravy
          • French fries
          • American cheese, mozzarella, or cheese curds

          19. Cheese fries

          Cheese fries

Speaking of cheese-centric hot dog topping and French fries, if the gravy used in the Disco Dog is a tad too rich, forgo the gravy and opt to dress up your hot dog with delicious cheese fries.

Looking for a cheese fries recipe that isn't a total caloric nightmare? We've got you covered! Get our recipe for Not-So-Unhealthy Cheese Fries.

          What you need:

          • French fries
          • Pepper Jack cheese (or cheese of your choice)

          20. Buffalo sauce & blue cheese

If you have a serious hankering for buffalo wings but only have a fridge full of hot dogs, consider it a blessing from the summer BBQ gods! For a tasty take on a traditional plate of Buffalo wings, simply drizzle on a little Buffalo sauce and creamy blue cheese after grilling your hot dog.

          What you need:

          • Buffalo sauce
          • Blue cheese

          21. Sautéed mushrooms & caramelized onions

          mushrooms onions hot dog

Sure, sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions are superb on burgers. But if you haven't tried this combination of toppings on a hot dog yet, you're missing out! Similar to our recipe for a Smashed A1 Swiss Burger, elevate the complexity of this hot dog's taste by also serving it with melted Swiss cheese and a little steak sauce.

          What you need:

          • Baby bella mushrooms
          • Sweet onion

          22. Avocado & bacon

If you love having hearty avocado toast with a side of sizzling, crisp bacon in the morning, then this combination of hot dog toppings is the way to go. To prepare these hot dog toppings, slice or smash about 1/4 of an avocado, fry up some bacon and break it down into bits, and get to dressing your dog! For an added breakfast-inspired twist, we also suggest sprinkling some Everything But the Bagel seasoning on top.

          What you need:

          • Avocado
          • Bacon
          • Everything But the Bagel seasoning (optional)

Whether it's fried, baked, shredded and used in tacos, or added to your favorite noodle dishes, chicken is a tasty way to add more protein to your meal. And while you can, of course, go out to your favorite restaurant and order your favorite chicken-centered dish, it's hard to find healthier options when eating out that isn't full of extra fat and sodium from the oils and other ingredients added. For a solution that still gives you plenty of opportunity to eat chicken your preferred way while maintaining more of its nutritional value, we've gathered the best healthy chicken recipes for you to try right in your kitchen.

One of the main health benefits of eating chicken is that it is a much leaner protein than some other animal sources like beef or pork. For instance, in a 4-ounce serving of chicken breast (without the skin), you'll get about 26 grams of protein and only about one gram of fat. But anyone who has ever tried cooking a chicken breast on its own knows that without anything added, this meat is pretty tasteless and can make for quite a boring dish.

Thankfully, with the help of these tasty—yet healthy—chicken recipes listed below, you can enjoy the health benefits of this lean protein without growing tired of your nightly dinners. We put our own spin on the basque chicken with the addition of dark beer, which brings a great flavor that will leave your taste buds in awe and your guests wanting more.

          Easiest Chicken Adobo

          Paleo chicken adobo

This may be the easiest chicken recipe of all time. The key is to reduce the sauce down to a syrup thick enough to cling to the chicken, as that will infuse your meal with a huge jolt of savory garlic-soy flavor. Pair with a side of veggies, and you'll be set for the perfect dinner. This dish also goes great with brown rice, but any type of grain will do.

Paleo chicken with tomato, olives, and capers

This baked chicken breast recipe will have you roasting the meat with tomatoes and capers, then olive oil basting the chicken in a savory broth, which keeps the meat moist as it's topped with a chunky, textured sauce. And it's made in just one baking dish, making for easy cleanup!

          Chicken Under a Brick

          Chicken under a brick

Gone are the days of drowning your chicken in a bottled barbecue sauce! Instead, this basic, rustic way of grilling chicken—no special sauces or condiments needed—gives you tons of flavor without the added calories. All you need is a brick or two and aluminum foil. Why does this work so well? That kind of extra weight from the brick pushes the chicken down evenly, which results in juicier meat and a crispy skin that no one can resist.

Chicken Burger With Sun-Dried Tomato Aioli

Chicken burger with sundried tomato aolia

We know chicken burgers can err on the side of bland, so this recipe takes the basic patty up a notch with a sun-dried tomato aioli sauce. It stays low-calorie, but it adds a rich texture and flavor to the chicken without overpowering the patty. Once you make this sauce, you'll want to put it on everything.

          Mom's Chicken Noodle Soup

          Healthy mom's chicken noodle soup

Chicken noodle soup does everything a comfort food is supposed to do, and it does so without a hefty caloric price tag. But steer clear of canned chicken soup. Not only is it sparse on chicken and vegetables, but a single cup can also carry up to half a day's worth of sodium. This version is light on the salt and loaded with chunky vegetables and shredded chicken for a truly hearty bowl of soup.

Get our recipe for Mom's Chicken Noodle Soup.

          Buffalo Chicken Sandwich

healthy buffalo chicken and blue cheese sandwich

Given the rate of wing consumption in this country, hot sauce-slathered chicken and blue cheese is clearly a winning combination for American palates. With this healthy chicken recipe, we stay true to the flavors people love—basting the chicken in hot sauce butter after grilling, topping with a yogurt-based blue cheese sauce—but manage to do what not many people can do: make Buffalo chicken into a healthy meal. Plus, you can try the same technique with grilled shrimp.

Get our recipe for Buffalo Chicken Sandwich.

          Margarita Chicken

          Paleo margarita chicken

Sizzling chicken and steak platters clutter the menus of nearly every major chain restaurant in this country, a testament to the enduring popularity of meat and melted cheese. We can't fault people for loving it—who wouldn't? But we do take issue with the fact that these savory skillets rarely contain fewer than 1,000 calories, regardless of who's holding the spatula. Unless you are, that is! Our version—a meal that you can have on the table in 20 minutes—contains all the same bells and whistles with much fewer calories.

Get our recipe for Margarita Chicken.

          Healthy Chicken Tikka Masala

          Healthy chicken tikka masala

It takes many years to master the complex spice art at the heart of Indian cuisine, but tikka masala is the perfect beginner's dish—light on ingredients and relatively mild in flavor. Tikka masala normally involves a heavy hand with both butter and cream, but we found that the combination of Greek yogurt and half-and-half gives you the same velvety texture for a fraction of the calories.

Get our recipe for Chicken Tikka Masala.

          Asian-Inspired Sesame Noodles With Chicken

          Healthy sesame noodles with chicken

These sesame noodles are both delicious and full of nutritional value. Add some protein and as many or as few vegetables as you like, and toss the whole package with a light but powerful dressing. If you follow the recipe as is, you'll be able to enjoy a huge burst of flavors with only 340 calories per serving.

          Thai Chicken Curry

          Healthy thai chicken curry

Redolent of ginger and lemongrass, chiles, and coconut milk, Thai curry brings all of the classic flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine—salty, sour, bitter, hot—together in one dish. What's more, it derives all of its flavors from ingredients packed with powerful antioxidants. Even coconut milk contains lauric acid, among the healthiest forms of fat you can consume.

Get our recipe for Thai Chicken Curry.

          Chili-Mango Chicken Stir-Fry

          Paleo chili-mango chicken

The combination of heat and sweet is a rollercoaster for our taste buds and a partnership that lurks behind—knowingly or not—our affection for so many Asian dishes—General Tso's, orange chicken, and mu shu pork, among others. Here, that combination upgrades a basic chicken stir-fry to something special with just two ingredients: The metabolism-boosting heat comes from a lashing of chili sauce and the sweet flavor from a thin coating of quickly cooked mango chunks.

Get our recipe for Chili-Mango Chicken Stir Fry.

          Chicken Scaloppine

          Paleo chicken scaloppine

Another Italian classic lost in translation. Too many cooks interpret this dish—traditionally chicken or pork, lightly floured and cooked with sage and prosciutto—as a huge helping of meat, breaded and fried and covered in a murky, sodium-strewn gravy. Our lighter, more authentic version wraps chicken and sage in a layer of prosciutto, which then becomes a crispy skin that keeps the chicken moist while it sautés. A splash of wine and chicken stock directly into the cooking pan becomes your two-minute sauce. It's just the latest proof of why simpler is so often better.

Get our recipe for Chicken Scaloppine.

          Chicken Cordon Bleu

Gluten-free chicken cordon cleu with honey mustard

This dish is French in name, but it feels American, right down to its molten cheese core. Normally, this chicken is stuffed, breaded, then deep-fried into submission. But our testing found that a high-heat oven provides all the crunch we want without all the calories we don't. If honey mustard feels a bit like gilding the lily, it is, but at 350 calories for the whole dish, why not?

          Asian-Inspired Chicken Meatballs

          Paleo asian chicken meatballs

These chicken meatballs are inspired by the street-corner grills in Vietnam and Thailand, where you'll often find the bold flavors of ginger, garlic, and chiles. Serve these not with pasta but with steamed rice, cucumbers, and big lettuce leaves to make wraps.

You've most likely heard fitness enthusiasts tout their favorite protein shakes to consume on a consistent basis, only to find out that what they're drinking is nothing more than powder, ice, and milk—or sometimes even just water instead of milk. Sure, these beverages can help you meet your protein goals, which will ultimately help with building more muscle mass and meeting your weight loss (or weight gain) goals, but if the drink doesn't taste good, what is the point? Thankfully, we found a handful of protein shake recipes out there that actually taste delicious.

But first, why would someone need a protein shake in the first place? These drinks can help you meet your protein goals if you struggle to eat enough high-protein foods during the day, and not only can adequate levels of protein help you maintain strong muscles and grow even stronger, but it can also help you lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way.

"Protein helps you to feel full, so you can feel satisfied and stop eating, and it also helps to preserve lean muscle, which correlates to your metabolism (the faster your metabolism, the faster you burn calories), says Lisa Young, PhD, RDN, author of Finally Full, Finally Slim and member of our Medical Expert Board. "Your body also burns more calories to process protein than to process carbs or fat."

If you decide to try a protein shake recipe at home in order to help you meet your protein needs, there are a few things to consider when choosing the healthiest one. When it comes to protein shakes, Young suggests "using colorful fruits and vegetables (which are low in calories and rich in antioxidants), going easy on nuts, seeds, and avocado because a little fat goes a long way, and limiting added sugars when you can."

Whether you're out and about and need an afternoon boost or are at home in the morning and want a light, refreshing breakfast, a green smoothie can satisfy your cravings quickly and easily—and can give your body some of the fruit and vegetables it needs. However, for some, the thought of adding bitter greens like kale and spinach to their smoothies may make them want to start running in the other direction. Even though leafy greens may not sound very appealing in your beverage, there are green smoothie recipes that actually taste really good and use ingredients that completely mask the taste of the greens.

When it comes to making a green smoothie for yourself, what are the best greens to use? Kale, spinach, collard greens, cabbage, romaine, chard, and arugula are all examples of leafy green vegetables, and each one of these greens offers its own unique blend of nutrients. But because of their more mild flavor, you'll see kale and spinach most commonly used in smoothie recipes. With spinach, your body will get a dose of fiber, vitamin A, iron, vitamin K, and folate. With kale, you'll have a hearty dose of vitamin K, vitamin C, manganese, and calcium.

If this is a problem you run into often, there are thankfully plenty of recipes out there for healthy salad dressings you can make on your own, all in under 10 minutes.

With the 15 healthy salad dressings listed below, you'll know exactly what's in them. Most of them have an olive oil base, some are made creamy with plain Greek yogurt or tahini, and some are sweetened using honey—which is a natural sweetener. But what these salad dressings don't have is a long list of ingredients you can't even pronounce, which is arguably the best part.

Keep this in mind when storing homemade salad dressings

The one perk of those store-bought bottles is that the dressing will always last longer because of the shelf-stable preservatives. When you're making your own dressing with simple ingredients, it won't last as long before going bad.

Some of the recipes below use ingredients that act as "natural preservatives," such as lemon juice or different types of vinegar. These ingredients will extend the life of your dressing a little bit, but you should still aim to consume them within a one-week period if possible. However, we did attach a note to each recipe about how long they last.

Also, something that commonly happens with oil-based salad dressings is that they can congeal in the fridge—which is another reason manufacturers will use additives in their products. Because of this potential issue with your homemade recipes, we recommend pulling the dressing out of the fridge about 30 minutes before you're going to use it to give it time to come to room temperature. And, not all of the recipes mentioned below require you to store the dressing in the refrigerator, so you'll find notes made about how to properly store each one.
